The State Capital Group’s 2006 Annual Meeting in Baltimore is sure to be a memorable one with fantastic networking opportunities and substantive legal programs on cutting edge topics, featuring outstanding speakers from the corporate world as well as government representatives.

The Annual Meeting officially kicks off at 3:30 pm on Thursday, September 28, with an Opening Session on "Procurement Law: Helping Clients Sell Goods and Services to State and Federal Agencies." Industry leaders — including Ron Hartman, Senior Vice President Business Development of Veolia Transport Worldwide; Thomas Hodgkins, Vice President of Government Relations for Scientific Games; and Russell Ring, Senior Vice President of Government Relations for Caremark Rx— will share their thoughts about what clients want from lawyers and lobbyists who support their bids to sell goods and services to state and federal agencies. They will discuss strategies for deployment of procurement lawyers and lobbyists so that government officials will evaluate proposals fairly and successfully.

On Friday, practice section meetings will focus on such varied topics as The Corporate Response to Greenhouse Gas Emissions; Venture Capital Financing; Approaches to Universal Healthcare Coverage; ADR in Employment Disputes; Electric Rate Deregulation; and the latest on Federal and International Tax Issues. Among the outstanding speakers who will participate in the practice section meetings are:

  • Michael Bronfien, Managing Partner of Sterling Venture Partners
  • John Buckley, Minority Chief Tax Counsel, Ways and Means Committee, U.S. House of Representatives
  • Dan Crippen, Economist and Former Director, Congressional Budget Office
  • The Honorable Paul W. Grimm, Chief U.S. Magistrate Judge for the District Court of Maryland
  • David Hartley, Tax Manager of Royal Ahold
  • The Honorable Jonas Jacobson, Maryland Deputy Secretary of the Environment;
  • Ellen Kandell, President of Alternative Resolutions
  • Bill Torgerson, General Counsel of Pepco
  • Annette Waters, Director of Human Resources for General Electric
H. Furlong Baldwin, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Nasdaq Stock Market, Inc., and The Honorable Joseph Murphy, Chief Judge of the Maryland Court of Special Appeals, will deliver keynote addresses during the Friday luncheon and Friday dinner programs.

Calling All Real Estate Attorneys!
The State Capital Group is organizing a Real Estate practice section, designed for member firm attorneys who have experience in commercial (and large, multi-family residential) real estate transactions, such as sales, leases, mortgages, title-insurance and related activities. The practice section will explore ways in which member firm attorneys can best work together representing real estate developers, REITs, owners associations, trade groups and other national and international players in the real estate market. The organizational meeting will begin at 1:00 pm on Thursday, September 28.

Bankruptcy and Insolvency Track
Several special sessions have been organized to focus on bankruptcy/insolvency issues. Topics include D&O Coverage and Deepening Insolvency; Current Developments and a “Top 10” List in the New Bankruptcy Code; and Avoidance of Bankruptcy and General Workout Issues. Speakers for the Bankruptcy track will include The Honorable Paul Mannes, Associate Judge for the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Maryland; Carrie Lesser, Assistant General Counsel of Bank of America; Margaret Good, The Meridian Group; Lewis Goodman, Wyndhurst Associates, LLC; and Alex Moglia, Moglia Advisors.
