Four New Law Firms Admitted - January 2002

Allende & Brea - Argentina - has opened an (additional) office in Miami, Florida. This is the firm's second U.S. office (they have been present in New York City since 1976) and is the start of a working relationship with Ferrell Schultz Carter Zumpano & Fertel. Dan Korn, a member of Allende & Brea will move to Miami as coordinator of the new relationship.

Gunnar Jonsson of Jonsson & Hall - Iceland - was recently elected President of the Iceland Bar Association.

Jim Cheek, Chair of the Corporate, Merger and Acquisition and Securities practice area of member law firm of Bass, Berry & Sims PLC - Tennesee - has been appointed chair of the National American Bar Association Task Force on Corporate Responsiblity. The task force was formed as a response to concerns emanating from Enron and Enron-like cases.

Kegler, Brown, Hill & Ritter - Ohio - has launched a national regulatory practice group, which culls the experience of former officeholders and regulatory leadership. Helen Mac Murray, recently joining as a director, will lead the firm's national regulatory practice group. McMurray was a chief of the Ohio attorney general's consumer protection section for the last six years.

Rebecca W. Watson, previously the managing partner of Gough, Shanahan, Johnson & Waterman - Montana, has been sworn in as Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Land and Minerals Management in the Department of Interior.

Appleby Spurling & Kempe - Bermuda - announced that Peter Bubenzer will succeed Dianna P. Kempe as Managing Partner of the firm effective April 1, 2002.

Nancy Parks, a real estate attorney with McDonough, Holland & Allen, - Los Angeles, CA - has been named Member of the Year for Outstanding Contributions and Professional Achievements by the Sacramento Chapter of CREW (Commercial Real Estate Women).

Bill Hyde has joined Ausley & McMullen, P.A. - Florida. He brings over 20 years of experience to the firm in environmental and land use law.

Diane C. Farr and Janet E. Williams have become associates in Brydon, Swearengen & England - Missouri.

Andrew F. Perrin of Larkin, Hoffman, Daly & Lindgren Ltd. - Minnesota - has been named to the Supplier Forum Advisory Board of the International Franchise Association (IFA).

Paz & Horowitz - Ecuador - has opened an office in Manta on the coast. The office is run by English-speaking members from Quito, including Silvia Alarcon, a long-time IP and Administrative Law attorney in the Quito office, and Andres Aguirre, an experienced IP, corporate and real property attorney.

Cam Ferenbach, a partner in the litigation department of Lionel Sawyer & Collins - Nevada -, has been appointed the 2002 President of the Clark County Bar Association.

Stanbrook & Hooper - Belgium - welcomes four new partners Willy Platteeuw, Marc De Witte, Lucia Grisar and Geert De Neef. The new partners, led by Willy Platteeuw, bring a wealth of experience in corporate, commercial and transactional matters to the firm and expand the scope of its services offered by adding a capability in international tax matters.

Cobbetts - Manchester, England - has announced that it will merge with Leeds firm, Read Hind Stewart, effective May 1, 2002. The merged firms will practice under the name of Cobbetts.

Edward J. Kelly has recently joined Tilleke & Gibbins International Ltd. as Deputy Director of the Intellectual Property Division, with primary responsibilities in the area of IP enforcement.

Thomas J. Oppold of Larkin, Hoffman, Daly & Lindgren Ltd.- Minnesota - recently received a favorable summary judgment order for his client, Precision Planting, Inc. from the Central District of Illinois holding two patents asserted against it invalid based on evidence that showed prior public knowledge and use of the patented invention.

Leslie Bryan Hart will be a shareholder of Lionel Sawyer & Collins - Nevada - in 2002.

Shelia J. Cox and Joseph E. "Joe" Zeszotarski Jr. have become partners of Poyner & Spruill LLP - North Carolina. Cox practices in the areas of commercial real estate and financial services. Zeszotarski practices in the areas of white collar criminal defense, commercial litigation and appeals.

Parsons Behle & Latimer - Utah - environmental and real estate law departments sponsored a breakfast briefing about the Brownfields Revitalization and Environmental Restoration Act recently signed by President Bush.


Mel Sorensen has become a member of Carney Badley Spellman - Washington. Sorensen's practice emphasizes matters before the Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner, including applications for certificates of authority, rate and form filings, market conduct examinations and other compliance issues.

Stephen J. O'Neill has joined Keegan, Werlin & Pabian, LLP - Massachusetts. O'Neill comes from the U.S. Department of State, where he was appointed by President Bush to serve as Chief of Staff to the U.S. Ambassador to Canada.

Charles F. Powers III, a longtime practicing attorney with the Raleigh firm of Sink Powers Sink & Potter, LLP, has joined Poyner & Spruill LLP - North Carolina - as a partner in the Raleigh office.

Kenneth Corey-Edstrom has joined Larkin, Hoffman, Daly & Lindgren Ltd. - Minnesota - enhancing the firm's Creditor, Debtor and Bankruptcy Law section. Corey-Edstrom is one of seven Minnesota attorneys who have been board certified in Business Bankruptcy Law by the American Board of Certification.

John McDowall has become a member of Carney Badley Spellman - Washington. He has extensive experience defending all manner of insurance-related claims, including personal injury, property damage, construction defect, and construction jobsite accident claims.

Thomas J. Oppold has joined Larkin, Hoffman, Daly & Lindgren Ltd. - Minnesota - Intellectual Property Law Department. He will serve as the firm's lead intellectual property litigator in matters pertaining to patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade dress, trade secrets and unfair competition.

Grupo Polar, represented by Torres Plaz & Araujo - Venezuela, obtained a favorable decision from the Superintendency for the Protection and Promotion of Free Competition, PROCOMPETENCIA, ruling against a claim brought by Regional and finding that Grupo Polar did not perform any practices in restraint of free trade through the alleged undue withholding and destruction of Regional containers.
